A VISIT TO SAGRES
THINGS TO DO - VISIT THE TOWN SAGRES
The small town of Sagres lies close to our retreat villa and is worth a visit in between your yoga sessions. Located at the southwestern tip of Portugal, its remote location makes it a very different place compared to the popular holiday resorts of the Algarve.
Sagres is where Henry the Navigator based himself in his later years - he died there in 1460. Today it’s a bit of a surf-hangout with lots of beautiful beaches like Praia do Tonel, Beliche and Mareta. The town also has a wide variety of restaurants and bars.
Visit the Fortaleza de Sagres or head to Cabo de São Vicente (Cape of Saint Vincent) to catch the fantastic sunsets! Back in medieval times, Cabo de São Vicente was believed to be the end of the world. It can be windy at the cape so if you’re planning to visit, take warm clothes.
It's also the starting point for two long-distance walking trails, the Via Algarviana that goes east across the country, and the Rota Vicentina, which heads north to Santiago do Cacém. Both are great hikes, and very pleasant to do in the Fall or Spring when the temperatures drop a bit.
Visiting Sagres and Cabo São Vicente is best done by taxi or rental car (distance 8 km, 10 minutes by car).
