Hiking the Algarve's wild west coast
Things to do: Hiking the algarve’s wild west coast
The West Algarve has protected nature reserves, beautiful beaches, wild coastlines, jagged cliffs, and is home to Europe’s most southwestern point, Cabo de São Vicente (Cape St Vincent), in Sagres. The best way to explore this wild west Algarve is to walk one of the many walking trails.
Rota Vicentina is a network of walking trails in Sw Portugal, totalling 450 km to walk, along the most beautiful and best preserved coastline of Southern Europe. You can walk the Historical Way, the Fishermen’s Trail and several circular routes. It offers a unique experience of two worlds: an authentic rural culture and an amazing wild coastline.
The route is fully marked in both directions, and can be travelled independently and in total security, preferably from September till June.
HISTORICAL WAY
This route follows the old trail that would have been used by pilgrims and locals on their journeys throughout this region. You will learn its history from the fountains, churches, old country houses, the villages you pass and the stories you hear along the way. These routes can also be enjoyed by mountainbike.
FISHERMEN’S TRAIL
This route is a bit more demanding and can only be done by foot. This trail has some degree of difficulty and is not recommended for people with fear of heights. The cliffs are systems in constant process of erosion, so be careful and stay on the marked trails.
If you come to this part of Portugal to enjoy our Algarve Yoga Retreat, why not go for a short walk to enjoy the experience of walking these famous trails? For example you can start at the Cabo de São Vicente in Sagres and walk the Fishermen’s Trail to the stunning beach Praia da Telheiro and end your walk at our villa in Vila do Bispo. What a lovely way to spend an afternoon!
